Carrying on a Legacy of Service
The Hiatt family’s commitment to law enforcement began with my father, Robert Martin “Bob” Hiatt—a man whose service and character laid the foundation for my own career. Dad served proudly under former Surry County Sheriffs Jim Taylor and Robert Montgomery, and later as a reserve deputy under Sheriff W.R. “Bill” Hall until his passing in 1990.
Since 1966, the Hiatt name has been a continuous presence at the Surry County Sheriff’s Office. I’ve been honored to carry on that legacy, having served under Sheriffs W.R. Hall, Connie R. Watson, Graham H. Atkinson, and now as a reserve deputy under Sheriff Jimmy D. Combs.
One of the greatest blessings of my life was the friendship I shared with my dad. He was a gifted storyteller with a quick wit and a genuine love for people. We shared many laughs over the years, but one memory that always brings a smile happened just before my very first shift as a deputy. At 20 years old, I wasn’t yet legally old enough to purchase ammunition—so Dad had to go with me to buy bullets for my service revolver. We got a good laugh out of that, and it’s a moment I’ll never forget.
Dad served this county with honesty, fairness, and humility. People still stop me to share their memories of him—stories filled with humor, directness, and deep respect for his integrity. Watching him engage with the community taught me more than any classroom ever could. He showed me the value of listening, treating people with respect, and standing by your word.
