For more than three decades, Steve Hiatt has dedicated his life to protecting and serving the citizens of Surry County. Beginning his law enforcement career in 1984 at just 20 years old, Steve has been a sworn deputy for nearly 33 years, retiring after 28 years of full-time service and continuing today as a reserve deputy. His long-standing career has earned him a reputation for being honest, fair, impartial, and steadfast—a trusted public servant known for doing things the right way.
Surry County Roots
Born in Mount Airy in August 1963, Steve is a lifelong resident of Surry County. He’s the son of the late Bob & Billie Nell Hiatt. His mother, a familiar face in the local banking community, has worked over 60 years in the industry and continues her service today at Surrey Bank & Trust. His father, who passed away in 1990, worked in both law enforcement and the two-way radio and TV business. Steve comes from a close-knit family, with two brothers, Marty and Kelly, and a sister, Lori Poindexter.
In 1991, Steve married Rhonda Snow of Dobson, daughter of Jerry and Carol Snow. Rhonda has worked at Insteel Industries for over 26 years and is an active member of the community. Together, Steve and Rhonda are dedicated members of Mount Bethel Moravian Church, where both serve in leadership roles. Steve currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the Church Board and is active in the choir, Sunday School, and Men’s Brotherhood ministry.
Community and Service Beyond the Badge
Steve is a committed community leader, holding memberships in the Renfro Masonic Lodge #691 AF & AM, the Surry County Fraternal Order of Police (where he serves as Secretary/Treasurer), and the North Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association. He is a former appointee to the Northwest Piedmont Council of Governments and has worked with youth and civic organizations across the county. One of his most meaningful contributions is his involvement in the annual “Cops & Kids” Christmas program, where local law enforcement helps children shop for gifts—building positive relationships and brighter holidays.
Career in Law Enforcement
Steve’s service in the Surry County Sheriff’s Office includes roles as Patrol Sergeant, Lieutenant Detective, and Civil Division Lieutenant. Over the years, he has led investigations, supervised deputies, managed civil process operations, and developed efficient systems to serve the public with transparency and professionalism. His achievements include:
Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate (Awarded in 1999)
Leadership in Patrol, Detective, and Civil Divisions
Expertise in criminal investigations, civil process, and firearms permits
Thousands of hours of specialized training in supervision, tactical operations, legal updates, and more
Steve also exemplified dedication in attendance and work ethic—using less than 20 hours of sick leave in 28 years of service.
Prepared to Lead
With deep roots in Surry County and a lifetime of service in law enforcement, Steve Hiatt has the proven experience, values, and vision to continue leading the Sheriff’s Office with integrity and commitment.
“My desire to serve as Sheriff comes from a lifetime of dedication to this county. I’ve walked beside you in service for over 30 years. With your support, I’ll continue to protect our communities, strengthen our Sheriff's Office, and build a safer future for all.”
