Sheriff Steve Hiatt Honored for Leading “Give A Kid A Christmas” Effort
The holiday spirit shone brightly in Surry County this week as Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt was honored by the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce for his outstanding leadership in the annual “Give A Kid A Christmas” campaign (also known as the Sheriff’s Christmas Campaign).
This cherished initiative—built on years of collaboration between the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, Surry County Schools, and local nonprofits—ensures that children in need across the county experience the magic and joy of the Christmas season. Since its beginning in the 1990s, the campaign has grown to provide clothing, food, toys, and holiday cheer to nearly 500 children each year.
In the most recent campaign, the Sheriff’s Office and its partners not only met—but exceeded—fundraising goals, making a meaningful difference in the lives of hundreds of local families. Sheriff Hiatt, along with longtime campaign supporters like Officer Graham Atkinson and Dr. Travis Reeves, helped lead the charge in organizing donations, coordinating volunteers, and ensuring every detail—from shopping lists to delivery routes—was managed with care.
Also recognized during the ceremony was Sergeant Jacob Hiatt, whose dedication to the effort reflects the heart of the Sheriff’s Office and its ongoing commitment to community-centered service.
